BASS (Bipolar Adolescent Sleep Study)

Principal Investigators: Tina Goldstein, PhD and Peter Franzen, PhD

Co-Investigators: Boris Birmaher MD, Rasim Diler MD

The BASS study was funded by a generous grant from the Pittsburgh Foundation.

This study is no longer recruiting.

Prior research studies support a direct link between sleep problems and suicidal thoughts and behaviors in adolescents. However, the specific nature and pathways that explain this association remain largely unknown. Drs. Goldstein and Franzen and the BASS team aimed to better understand the sleep-suicide link in order to create targeted prevention efforts. The objective of the BASS project is to understand the temporal, psychosocial and neurobiological associations between sleep problems and suicidal thoughts and behaviors among youth with bipolar disorder. Data collection for the BASS study was completed in August 2015, and data analyses are currently underway.
